Most of us use letterheads every day, whether they are for cover letters, introductions, quotes, invoices and even demands for payment!
But they should also be seen as an essential part of your marketing toolkit. Why? Because it's another point of contact with your clients, and if you deliver a professional image that reflects your business values you're far more likely to gain or retain their interest. Hence why a poorly designed will also give a lasting impression, unfortunately the wrong one!
Make sure all the right contact information is clear and legible, but not so much that it becomes the dominant feature... the content should always be the dominant feature.
If you're a limited company, remember it's a legal requirement (Companies Act 2010) to have your registered office address and registration number on your letterheads. In fact the same is true for all your invoices, emails and website.
Whilst we would always suggest pre-printed stationery for the higher quality and greater impact this delivers, we are also mindful of cost, so we can also create fantastic looking templates in Word if your quantities are small and you'd rather print yourself. And yes we do take into account that fact when designing to keep your ink costs to a minimum!
So before your next print run, we'd be delighted to do a review of your current design and offer our thoughts - and we'd be equally delighted to tell you not to change it if it's all good.

Wherever possible try to ensure that design elements are applied consistently across your various stationery items.
In the example above created for for SMP Consultancy, you can see that the logo always appears top right and the Accessibility Business Mark ™ (an integral part of the business service), appears embedded in the bar at the bottom which also highlights the company strap line. The same Mark also appears as a watermark on both the letterheads and continuation sheets.
